Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp of flour of choice (I typically use coconut, cassava, or normal flour)

  • 3 tbsp chili powder

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp ground coriander

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • 1 tsp Real Salt (Skip if using a super salty bone broth)

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (Add more if you like it spicy or remove for more mild flavor)

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp avocado oil

  • 1/4 cup tomato paste

  • 3 cups bone broth of choice

  • 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder (DO NOT SKIP)

  • Pinch of cinnamon

  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (optional but recommended)

Steps:

1 - Mix the flour and all seasoning together in a small bowl until combined

2 - In a large cast iron skillet, melt the butter in the avocado oil on medium heat

3 - Add spice mixture and cook while whisking for 2 minutes

4 - Whisk in the tomato paste until completely combined and let cook for a minute or two

5 - Reduce the heat to low, then gradually whisk in the chicken broth. Continue to whisk until smooth and the lumps are dissolved.

6 - Whisk in cocoa powder and cinnamon

7 - Let sauce come to a simmer

8 - Bring the sauce to a simmer and continue to simmer, whisking often, until it thickens to your desired consistency, about 5-7 minutes. Keep in mind the sauce will thicken a little as it cools.

9 - Remove from heat and stir in apple cider vinegar. Taste and adjust seasonings as desired with additional salt, cayenne, or vinegar. (If you want it sweeter, drizzle a little honey in.)

10 - If the sauce thickens too much, whisk in additional broth until it reaches the desired consistency.
