The Best Seed Oil-Free Burger Buns: Silver Hills Buns! (Plus a Homemade Recipe!)
Who doesn’t love a good burger night? 🍔🔥
Whether you’re grilling in the backyard or hosting a summer get-together, the right bun can make or break your burger. But when you’re committed to eating seed oil-free, finding a decent burger bun at the store can feel like mission impossible.
That’s why I was shocked (in the best way) when I discovered Silver Hills Bakery. Not only are their burger and hot dog buns free of seed oils, but they also boast something I had never seen on a bread label before:
👉 “Non-Glyphosate Tested.”
Yes, really. No weird “healthy” taste. No inflammatory seed oils. And no glyphosate—a chemical found in Roundup weed killer that unfortunately shows up in way too many mainstream breads. 😬
Let me break down why these buns are my go-to—and if you’re feeling adventurous, stick around for my favorite homemade seed oil-free bun recipe!
🥯 The Toast Test
If you are like my love, you love a good texture.
When it comes to burger buns, you want to have it a little crunchy on the outside, and buttery on the inside...if you are a burger person too--you know exactly what I am talking about.
Everyone has tried a health food bread option and frankly it was a sloppy mess. Lol! That's another great thing about this brand, you can get the perfect toasted texture every time!
🥯 Why I Love Silver Hills Bakery Buns
1️⃣ Seed Oil-Free Goodness: No canola, soybean, or other inflammatory oils lurking in the ingredients.
2️⃣ Non-Glyphosate Tested: Glyphosate has been linked to gut irritation and inflammation, so I love that they make this a priority.
3️⃣ Great Texture, No Weird Taste: No cardboard-like texture here—just delicious buns that hold up to juicy burgers and saucy toppings.
4️⃣ Convenient & Clean: Perfect for those busy weeks when I don’t have time to make buns from scratch.
BUT…A Word of Caution: Not all Silver Hills products are seed oil-free, so always double-check the ingredients before tossing them into your cart.
🌾 Wait…What’s the Deal with Glyphosate Anyway?
If you haven’t gone down the glyphosate rabbit hole, here’s a quick crash course:
Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup weed killer, and it’s sprayed on most conventionally grown grains.
The problem? It doesn't just kill weeds—it can also wreak havoc on your gut.
Research suggests glyphosate disrupts gut bacteria, which can cause digestive issues and inflammation.
💡 If you or a loved one deals with unexplained tummy issues, looking for glyphosate-free grains might be worth exploring. That’s exactly why Silver Hills caught my eye in the first place!
🍞 Homemade Seed Oil-Free Burger Buns (Easy + Delicious!)
Even though I love Silver Hills, sometimes I just want that fresh-baked bun experience. My husband loves burgers (lol I am sure most do) so I decided to learn how to make some fresh buns for Valentine's Day in 2022.The picture above is from that batch, for the first time I thought they came out perfect! So, this recipe is beginner-friendly too. :) I have only made them a couple of times since then since we don't eat grains much, but this is a recipe that I try and bring out every Summer since.
Here’s my go-to seed oil-free recipe—perfect for burger nights, BBQs, or any time you need a soft, pillowy bun.
Ingredients:
🥣 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
💧 1 cup + 2 tablespoons warm water (110°F)
🥑 1/3 cup well-sourced avocado oil (for seed oil-free goodness!)
🍯 1/4 cup sugar (optional—adds that restaurant-style sweetness)
🥚 1 large egg, beaten
🧂 1 teaspoon salt
🌾 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (choose a clean brand or grind your own ancient grains!)
For Topping:
1 egg yolk + 1 tablespoon water (egg wash)
2 tablespoons sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions:
1️⃣ Activate the Yeast:
In a large bowl, combine the yeast and warm water.
Add the avocado oil and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it gets foamy. (This is when you know the yeast is ready to work its magic!)
2️⃣ Make the Dough:
Whisk in the egg.
Slowly mix in the salt and flour, adding flour gradually until a soft dough forms.
3️⃣ Knead the Dough:
Knead in a stand mixer for 3-5 minutes (or by hand on a lightly floured surface) until smooth and elastic.
Do NOT let it rise!
4️⃣ Shape & Rest:
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each into a ball.
Place them on a lined baking sheet.
Cover with a kitchen towel and let rest for 10 minutes.
5️⃣ Brush & Bake:
Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Brush the tops with the egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Bake for 8-12 minutes or until golden brown.
✨ Enjoy warm or let cool for later. These buns freeze beautifully too!
